Dear Student Affairs CandidateI’m thinking of you as conference season is upon us. NASPA, TPE, OPE, ACPA are all just around the corner. It’s a beautiful thing when talent hits opportunity and all your academic and practical experience finds a home in your first or next professional position. I wish all of you the very best and offer the preparation advice* below for your consideration. Take what you want, leave your words of wisdom in the comments, and follow the hyperlinks and google your questions for further insights. Most of all, bring your best self, maximize the opportunities and own your choices.

As we closed out 2011 Becca Obergefell(@oberbecca) posted her thoughts on her #oneword2011 and encouraged the #wlsalt #sachat twitter community who participated to share. Now we’ve moved into 2012 Niki Rudolph (@Nikirudolph) is gathering all your #oneword2012 to put into a wordle on Friday. You can see all the amazing words that have already been selected by following the hashtag #oneword2012 or check out the NEW Google doc -linked below. While the words have come easily for some still others are working to find their word. Here are some thoughts to assist you as you discover your word.

Off the charts organizational skills, super creative, massive capacity for achievement and a beautiful heart. I respect and admire Ann Marie Klotz for so many of her amazing qualities and I enjoy her for the humor and warmth she shows us all. She makes great look easy and her energy and love for GLACUHO, DePaul, Chicago & ACUHO-I is powerful. Currently the Assistant Director for Selection and Training in Residential Education at DePaul University. Ann Marie is also the GLACUHO President & completing her Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration at DePaul University. She will be presenting at ACE in NOLA. Look for her sessions with Julie Payne Kirchmeier & Deb Schmidt-Rogers -they will be outstanding!

Do you aspire to move from the practitioner side of Residential Education and Housing to a full-time faculty position? Both of these student affairs professionals made this leap successfully. We can all learn so much from their stories, experiences and advice.
I’m so honored to introduce Dr. Tony Cawthon, Clemson University, College of Education, Chair of Leadership, Counselor Education, and Human and Organizational Development and Professor in Student Affairs!! Tony is fascinating, charming, and inspiring. Frankly, I love him for so many reasons and I admire him most for his endless committment to Student Affairs, to students and to ACUHO-I. Always engaged, learning and growing it’s a very cool adventure with Tony on board. If he’s presenting get there early and grab a chair- you will walk away with tons of creative ideas to implement and ideas to ponder.

Please say hello to our 2011 ACUHO-I Scholar in Residence, Dr. Maureen E. Wilson, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs, Bowling Green State University. As the Scholar in Residence, Maureen will present her thoughts and lead a discussion on the book, Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses, by Aron and Roksa. Come to NOLA ready to listen, engage, & share your thoughts on what the Chronicle of Higher Education has called, “A damning indictment of the American higher-education system.” Grab the book for the plane or read an excerpt. Controversy is so much more exciting when we have an opinion. Maureen is scary smart and so approachable and authentic. Even in her pic you can see the positive energy and spirit you will feel in her presence. I hope you take this opportunity to bask in her wisdom and exchange ideas about the future.
